The DuPont Safety Perception Survey
This survey offers a powerful, data-driven tool for understanding, benchmarking and catalyzing your organization’s journey toward world-class safety performance. Survey data has scientifically validated DuPont methods that help reduce injuries by strengthening your safety culture.
Since 1999, the DuPont Safety Perception Survey has helped organizations to evaluate employees’ perceptions of their safety program and identify behaviors, attitudes and other factors that can derail a safety program. The survey consists of 24 multiple-choice questions that evaluate the three elements of safety management: leadership, structure, and processes and actions.
A Tool to Catalyze Your Safety Culture
Involving every level of your organization, the Safety Perception Survey gives your organization an objective, data-driven process for understanding how your safety culture changes over time. Each survey response can be compared within your organization, as well as to responses at external benchmark companies, with superior safety performance.
Periodic use of the Safety Perception Survey gives our clients an effective process for assessing, benchmarking and catalyzing safety culture improvement at every stage of their journey to world-class safety. Employees accept the data, rather than thinking it has been “manufactured” to make a point. Corporate leaders become aware of how the company is performing compared to its peers. For organizations with an existing safety program, this process can focus and rejuvenate efforts by rapidly penetrating into all levels of the organization.
Scientifically Validated Methodologies
DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DSS) has used this survey at hundreds of clients around the world, and our database includes over one million responses covering 64 industries, 45 countries and more than 6,700 locations. In 2009, DSS completed a study of Safety Perception Survey data, in an effort to define what has always resisted quantification: why one plant site has outstanding safety performance, while another has poor performance.
The study findings conclusively demonstrated that all three aspects of safety culture — leadership, structure, and processes and actions — each correlate to injury rates. This study also validated the efficacy of our proprietary DuPont Bradley Curve as a tool to guide our clients through the process of cultural change that leads to world-class safety performance.
