Puncture Resistant Packaging | DuPont™ Tyvek®

For puncture resistant packaging of medical and pharmaceutical products, the tough, continuous filaments of DuPont™ Tyvek® provide an optimal solution when compared to medical-grade papers. These tough filaments help protect your package from product breakthrough, even from the sharp or irregular edges of many surgical devices. They also help protect package integrity from penetration by an object outside the package during rough handling.

Results from numerous tests prove that, compared to medical-grade papers, Tyvek® provides superior puncture resistance and tear strength. For example, in Spencer puncture tests, it takes 50 in.-lbf/in.2 (8756 J/m2) to puncture Tyvek® 1073B—a force that far exceeds what a medical package would typically encounter in the healthcare industry—but it takes only 5.96 in.-lbf/in.2 (1044 J/m2) to puncture synthetic fiber-reinforced paper. This property indicates how a package will perform if an object falls on it or if an object inside the package strikes the lid.

The superior strength of Tyvek®, when compared to medical-grade papers and synthetic fiber-reinforced paper, is also evident in the results of the Elmendorf tear test, where a force of up to 8X is required to propagate an initiated tear from a cut or nick.  This property indicates how likely a material will tear under force.

With its superior strength and exceptional puncture resistance, Tyvek® is a proven choice for puncture resistant medical packaging.
